Cyanine 5.5 carboxylic acid is a fluorescent probe that has been used to study the uptake of retinoic acid in muscle and tumor cells. It has been shown that the uptake of cyanine 5.5 carboxylic acid is limited by hydrophilicity, so it can be used to target hydrophilic regions of tumors. This probe can also be conjugated with anticancer drugs such as all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) for use in cancer therapy. ATRA is a prodrug that is converted to active metabolites by cytochrome p450 enzymes, which have been shown to induce apoptosis and inhibit tumor growth in vitro and in vivo.
