It can react with alkenes to form 1,2-diphenylcyclopropanes and 1,2-diphenylethanes. 3-Methyl-phthalic acid dimethyl ester undergoes intramolecular cyclization to form pyridones and pyridines. This compound is an effective diene for the synthesis of eucarvone and yields hydroperoxides when reacted with peroxide.
