Silver sulfide is a compound that consists of silver and sulfur. It is used in the production of copper-silver alloys, as a catalyst for organic synthesis, and in the manufacture of optical imaging probes. Silver sulfide has a constant pressure coefficient of thermal expansion. It also has excellent transport properties in human serum and wastewater treatment. The redox potential for this material is very low, making it suitable for use as an electron scavenger in wastewater treatment. Silver sulfide can be used to detect the presence of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli through its binding to bacterial DNA under an x-ray diffraction data. Silver sulfide also has biological properties because it binds to proteins such as albumin, which are found in human serum or urine samples.
