Pipermethystine is a cytosolic extract of Hypericum perforatum that has shown anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo. Pipermethystine induces apoptosis by inhibiting the function of mitochondria, which leads to the release of cytochrome c and activation of caspases. The membrane potential changes observed after treatment with pipermethystine may be due to an increase in ATP levels as well as a decrease in malondialdehyde. This extract also inhibits the production of necrosis factor, which is involved in tumor growth and development. Pipermethystine has been shown to have no cytotoxic effects on normal cells.
