<p>1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-5-mercapto-1,2,3,4-tetrazole is a reactive trimethyl azide compound. It can be synthesized by condensation of chlorosilane with trimethyl hydroxyl and bromoethane. The reaction of 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-mercapto-1,2,3,4-tetrazole with ethanolamine in the presence of an acid ethyl ester provides the corresponding 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-mercaptoazetidinium ethyl ester in high yield. This compound has been shown to react with amines and ammonia to give a heterocyclic amine and ammonium salt respectively.</p>
