Diethyl 2-(4-(methylamino)benzamido)pentanedioate is a prodrug that is metabolized to (S)-diethyl 2-(4-aminobenzamido)pentanedioate, which inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This prevents the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate, an essential cofactor in the synthesis of nucleic acids and amino acids. The antibiotic has been shown to be active against bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus, but not against mammalian cells.
