Apigenin is a flavonoid that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against the genus Bacillus. It also inhibits the growth of apo-Bacillus anthracis and may be useful against other bacteria. Apigenin's effects are due to its interaction with the hepg2 cell skeleton and acetate extract, which inhibit bacterial growth by damaging bacterial DNA synthesis. Apigenin shows synergistic effects with hyperoside, a flavonoid found in plants like Hypericum perforatum. The two substances together were shown to kill Shigella dysenteriae cells more effectively than either substance alone. This synergistic effect may be due to their similar biosynthetic pathways.
