3-Acetoxy-2-butanone is a reactive chemical that can be used as an acetic acid derivative. It is not considered to be hazardous. 3-Acetoxy-2-butanone is made from the reaction of acetyl chloride with benzoic acid, diethyl succinate, and fatty acids. The reaction time for this chemical will vary depending on the concentration of reactants and desired yield. This compound has been shown to polymerize cationically with a wide variety of monomers including acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, styrene, and butadiene. 3-Acetoxy-2-butanone is also used as a modifier in the synthesis of fatty acid esters.
