• Descrição: Naltrexone is a drug that is used in the treatment of addiction to opioids and alcohol. It has been shown to inhibit the breakdown of endorphins, which leads to reduced pain sensitivity. Naltrexone also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Naltrexone binds to opioid receptors and blocks their action, preventing the transmission of signals by the neurotransmitter dopamine. This binding prevents the euphoric effects associated with opioid abuse while still allowing pain relief. The use of naltrexone in inflammatory bowel disease was first proposed in 1978 based on its ability to reduce colonic motility in animal models and its subsequent effect on gut function.
