Diethyl 2-acetylglutarate is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase that inhibits the production of lipids. Diethyl 2-acetylglutarate has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of lipid synthesis, and therefore, may have therapeutic benefits for people with autoimmune diseases or congestive heart failure. It also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme hydroxyl group, which can cause inflammation. Diethyl 2-acetylglutarate is also a polymerized compound with two stereoisomers. One stereoisomer is cis and the other is trans. The cis form of this compound has been shown to be more potent than its trans counterpart in inhibiting fatty acid synthase.
