Dimethyl 3,4,5,6-Tetrafluorophthalate inhibits growth of bacteria by binding to choline in the cell membrane and blocking the production of formyl-methionine. In addition, it reduces the activity of formyl-methionine synthetase by forming a complex with metal ions. Dimethyl 3,4,5,6-Tetrafluorophthalate also inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by interfering with the ribosome's ability to read mRNA.
