It inhibits the synthesis of viral proteins by binding to nucleic acids. This compound also has been shown to inhibit the growth of some bacteria and fungi. Ethyl 2-[(2-chloroacetyl)amino]-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-benzothiophene-3-carboxylate binds to the 5'-terminal nucleotide of a growing nucleotide chain in DNA or RNA and prevents further elongation of the chain by competitive inhibition with other nucleotides.
