2-methyl-2,5-diazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane is a synthetic molecule that is synthesized by the reaction of potassium with 2,5-diazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane dihydrobromide and sodium hydroxide in an organic process research laboratory. This molecule has been used to study the synthesis of quinolones and the role of the nitrogen atom in these molecules. 2-Methyl-2,5-diazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane has also been shown to be an antibiotic with antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens, as well as Gram negative bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex.
