Trifluoroethanol (TFE) is a chemical compound that is used in the manufacture of ethylene oxide and other chemicals. It has a boiling point of 53 degrees Celsius and can be distilled under vacuum. It is also used as an intermediate for the synthesis of polymers such as polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, and copolymers with carboxylates or acrylates. TFE will react with electron-rich compounds such as methoxy groups to form copolymers. Copolymers are created when two different monomers react together to form one polymer molecule. This process is known as copolymerizing. The transition temperature of TFE is -7 degrees Celsius, meaning it will melt at this temperature or below. TFE has been synthesized by the reaction of ethylene and fluorine gases at high temperatures and pressures.
