Alphamine red R is a dye that is used for the detection of purines. It is used to detect bacteriodes and formic acid, which are indicators for the presence of purines in urine. Alphamine red R can also be used as a decolorizer and morphological indicator, as well as an optical indicator for Gram-negative bacteria. This dye has been shown to be sensitive to pH and temperature, which can affect its color intensity. Alphamine red R binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of the ribosome. This inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death. The use of this dye has been shown to be phylogenetically and chemically specific, with different concentrations required depending on the type of organism being tested.
