1-(5-Nitropyridin-3-yl)ethan-1-one is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of drugs, including n-acetylpyridine. The first step in the synthesis is to convert 1-(5-nitropyridin-3-yl)ethanone into 1-(5-nitropyridin-3-yl)ethanol. This can be accomplished by reacting with hydrazine, which yields nitropyridines and phenols. In this reaction, an aldehyde reacts with hydrazine to form a condensation product that is reduced by sodium borohydride to yield the desired product. Trifluoroacetic anhydride can also be used as a reagent for nitration, which is followed by condensation with trifluoroacetic acid and aromatic aldehydes.
