(E)-3,4,5-Trimethoxycinnamic Acid is a p-hydroxybenzoic acid found in Chinese herbs. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme 4-hydroxycinnamic acid oxidase. This binding prevents the formation of 4-hydroxycinnamic acid from p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which can be toxic for humans. (E)-3,4,5-Trimethoxycinnamic Acid also has antimicrobial activity against various strains of bacteria and fungi. It is an effective agent in preventing bacterial growth on surfaces due to its matrix effect with sodium carbonate. (E)-3,4,5-Trimethoxycinnamic Acid also has effects on neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid and ent-kaurane diterpenoid that may contribute to its anti-inflammatory properties.
