Sodium pyrithione is a pyridinethione-class compound with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity that can be used in antisepsis, antifouling, and antibacterial research, and also has certain anti-tuberculosis activity. In bacterial models, Sodium pyrithione can affect cell membrane function, substrate transport, and intracellular ATP levels, and can cause leakage of intracellular substances; studies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis also show bactericidal effects. In addition, molecular simulations suggest that Sodium pyrithione can undergo electrostatic interactions with bacterial phospholipid head groups, and it can be used in research on antibacterial mechanisms, membrane-related processes, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and antiseptic and antifouling materials.
