Sulbactam-Natrium ist ein Beta-Lactamase-Inhibitor, der häufig in Kombination mit Beta-Lactam-Antibiotika verwendet wird, um deren Wirksamkeit gegen resistente Bakterienstämme zu erhöhen. Es handelt sich um ein weißes bis off-white kristallines Pulver, das in Wasser löslich ist, was die Verabreichung in klinischen Umgebungen erleichtert. Der Wirkstoff wirkt, indem er irreversibel an Beta-Lactamase-Enzyme bindet, die von bestimmten Bakterien produziert werden, und verhindert so, dass diese Enzyme das Antibiotikum inaktivieren. Dieser Mechanismus ermöglicht es dem Antibiotikum, gegen Bakterien wirksam zu bleiben, die sonst resistent wären.
