The compound was first synthesized in 1887 by German chemist Emil Fischer and reacted with copper chloride to form tri-potassium orthophosphate. Tri-potassium orthophosphate has also been shown to have a model system in which it binds with DNA and alters its shape, changing its ability to bind with other molecules such as proteins or enzymes.
