Beschreibung: Isopentan, auch bekannt als 2-Methylbutan, ist eine organische Verbindung mit der chemischen Formel C5H12. Es handelt sich um ein verzweigtes Alkane, das durch seine fünf Kohlenstoffatome und zwölf Wasserstoffatome gekennzeichnet ist. Isopentan ist bei Raumtemperatur eine farblose, brennbare Flüssigkeit mit einem Siedepunkt von etwa 27,8 °C (82 °F) und einem Schmelzpunkt von etwa -159,5 °C (-255,1 °F). Es ist in Wasser unlöslich, aber in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich, was es in verschiedenen Anwendungen nützlich macht. Isopentan wird häufig als Lösungsmittel in Laboren, als Treibmittel bei der Herstellung von Polystyrolschaum und in der petrochemischen Industrie verwendet. Sein niedriger Siedepunkt und seine Flüchtigkeit machen es geeignet für den Einsatz in der Kühlung und als Kraftstoffbestandteil. Darüber hinaus ist Isopentan ein bedeutendes Zwischenprodukt in der organischen Synthese und kann durch katalytische Isomerisierung von n-Pentan hergestellt werden. Aufgrund seiner Entflammbarkeit muss es mit Vorsicht behandelt werden, wobei geeignete Sicherheitsprotokolle beachtet werden müssen, um Brandgefahren zu vermeiden.
