Theobromin ist ein natürlich vorkommendes Alkaloid, das hauptsächlich in Kakaobohnen, Teeblättern und bestimmten anderen Pflanzen vorkommt. Es wird als Methylxanthin klassifiziert, eine Gruppe von Verbindungen, zu der auch Koffein und Theophyllin gehören. Theobromin hat eine chemische Formel von C7H8N4O2 und ein Molekulargewicht von etwa 180,17 g/mol. Es ist ein weißes, geruchloses Kristallpulver, das leicht in Wasser, aber besser in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich ist. Theobromin zeigt milde stimulierende Eigenschaften, die hauptsächlich das zentrale Nervensystem betreffen, und es wurde gezeigt, dass es vasodilatatorische Effekte hat, die zu einer erhöhten Durchblutung führen können. Während Theobromin in moderaten Mengen für den menschlichen Verzehr im Allgemeinen sicher ist, kann es für bestimmte Tiere, insbesondere Hunde und Katzen, aufgrund ihres langsameren Stoffwechsels der Verbindung toxisch sein. Seine Anwesenheit in Schokoladenprodukten wird oft mit den angenehmen Effekten des Schokoladenkonsums in Verbindung gebracht.

Theobromine is a xanthine alkaloid that is found in the cocoa plant. It can be found in the blood, urine, and breast milk of humans and it is metabolized by liver enzymes. Theobromine has been shown to cause an increase in blood pressure in animals, but not humans. Theobromine has been shown to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes, including phosphodiesterase and adenosine deaminase. This drug also inhibits the activity of some cytochrome P450 enzymes. Theobromine has also been shown to have a diuretic effect on rat liver microsomes.
