Indigo carmine (Fd&c blue no. 2) is a synthetic blue food colorant; in addition to being a dye, it can directly serve as a model substrate in visible-light photocatalytic degradation research, used to evaluate the degradation performance of photocatalytic systems such as TiO₂, CeO₂, and g-C₃N₄ toward organic dyes. In bacteriophage research, Indigo carmine shows selective inactivation against DNA phages P001, T4, T1, T7, and λ, with EC₅₀ of 0.006-0.105 mg/mL, while no obvious activity was observed against RNA phage MS2. Indigo carmine can selectively bind double-stranded DNA and promote phage genome release and capsid deformation, and under specific experimental conditions can reduce phage titers by up to approximately 7-log.
