2-Furoic acid is a compound that belongs to group P2 of the picolinic acid family. It has been shown to have synergistic effects with picolinic acid and a number of other compounds, including sodium fusidate, in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. 2-Furoic acid has been identified as a potential drug target for hypertension and may be used as an antihypertensive agent. This compound can be prepared by mixing hydrazine with 2-furoic acid chloride in water or ethanol at room temperature. The product can then be purified using column chromatography or recrystallized from methanol. The mechanism of this reaction is not yet known but it may involve the formation of dehydroascorbic acid by dehydration.
