It is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA to 3-hydroxyacyl CoA and 3-ketoacyl CoA. The enzyme has been shown to be inhibited by cis-3-hexenal, cis-3-hexenoic acid, and cis-3 hexenol.
