Merbarone is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the nuclear DNA. It has been shown to bind to topoisomerase II and inhibit DNA synthesis in vitro. Merbarone also has potent antitumor activity in vivo and induces apoptosis in squamous carcinoma cells.
