Beschreibung

Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone that belongs to the group of natural compounds. It is an antimalarial drug that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antiprotozoal properties. Artemisinin is effective against a number of parasites, including Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for malaria. Artemisinin binds to iron in hemoglobin, which prevents it from delivering oxygen throughout the body. This leads to oxidative injury and cell death. Artemisinin has also been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukins 1β (IL-1β) and 6 (IL-6). Artemisinin has been studied in a number of animal models, including mice with tumors, which have shown toxicity studies.
