It reversibly binds to the non-reducing end of the N-glycan, and blocks the addition of sugar by inhibiting the enzyme glycogen synthase kinase 3β. This compound has also been shown to inhibit human cell growth, as well as lysates from cells that have been treated with this compound. The nature of this compound is such that it can be used in glycosylation studies on protein or glycopeptide.
