Beschreibung

Camptothecin is a cytotoxic agent that has been shown to be effective against a variety of cancers. It is a natural product derived from the Chinese plant Camptotheca acuminata and has been used in the treatment of various cancers, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Camptothecin forms protein complexes with DNA, which bind to the enzyme topoisomerase I and inhibit its activity. This results in DNA strand breaks during replication. It also binds to DNA by covalent bonds and inhibits transcription elongation by inhibiting the synthesis of RNA from DNA templates. The transition metal ion-dependent adducts formed with camptothecin have been shown to localize in subcellular organelles such as mitochondria, lysosomes, and endoplasmic reticulum.
