It also increases the pH in an acidic environment, which may make it an effective treatment for infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Potassium DL-lactate can be used in combination with sodium citrate and has been shown to reduce bacterial growth on metal surfaces. It is also known to have surface activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as S. aureus.
