1-Benzylpiperazine is an analytical method for measuring the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, in wastewater. It is used for the treatment of wastewater because it has been shown to be effective at removing nitrogen from wastewater. 1-Benzylpiperazine is also a metabolite of benzylpiperazine, which has been shown to have physiological effects on locomotor activity and the production of lc-ms/ms. The physiological effects are probably due to its ability to increase dopamine levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake by monoamine transporters. 1-Benzylpiperazine can also form a glucuronide conjugate with dopamine, hydroxyl group.
