Sulfona de dimetilo, también conocido como metilsulfonilmetano (MSM), es un compuesto orgánico que contiene azufre con la fórmula química C2H6O2S. Methyl sulfone is a synergistic agent that enhances the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. It has been shown to have an optimum concentration between 0.1 and 1 mM, with a synergic effect at concentrations of 5 and 10 mM. Inhibition of these enzymes reduces the production of prostaglandins, which are proinflammatory mediators that cause pain and inflammation. Methyl sulfone also has antioxidant properties due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). This drug has been shown to be effective in treating infectious diseases such as wild-type strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Helicobacter pylori, or Staphylococcus aureus.
