Mevastatina

Descripción:
Mevastatina, también conocido como compactina, es una estatina que ocurre de forma natural y que se utiliza principalmente por sus propiedades para reducir el colesterol. Se deriva de la fermentación de ciertos hongos, particularmente Penicillium citrinum. La estructura química de Mevastatina presenta un anillo de lactona y un grupo ácido hidroxílico, que son cruciales para su actividad biológica. Como inhibidor de la HMG-CoA reductasa, Mevastatina desempeña un papel significativo en la vía del mevalonato, reduciendo efectivamente la síntesis de colesterol en el hígado. Esta acción ayuda a disminuir los niveles de colesterol de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) en el torrente sanguíneo, reduciendo así el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares. Mevastatina se administra típicamente en su forma activa, que es el ácido hidroxílico, ya que la forma de lactona se convierte en la forma activa en el cuerpo. Aunque se ha utilizado en investigación y tiene una importancia histórica en el desarrollo de medicamentos estatinas, su uso clínico ha sido en gran medida reemplazado por estatinas más potentes y ampliamente estudiadas. Al igual que con todos los medicamentos, se deben considerar los posibles efectos secundarios e interacciones al evaluar su uso.
