Mevastatina

Mevastatina, también conocido como compactina, es una estatina que ocurre de forma natural y que se utiliza principalmente por sus propiedades para reducir el colesterol. Se deriva de la fermentación de ciertos hongos, particularmente Penicillium citrinum. La estructura química de Mevastatina presenta un anillo de lactona y un grupo ácido hidroxílico, que son cruciales para su actividad biológica. Como inhibidor de la HMG-CoA reductasa, Mevastatina desempeña un papel significativo en la vía del mevalonato, reduciendo efectivamente la síntesis de colesterol en el hígado. Esta acción ayuda a disminuir los niveles de colesterol de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) en el torrente sanguíneo, reduciendo así el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares.
