VU 0134992 binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor and inhibits its tyrosine kinase activity, preventing phosphorylation of intracellular proteins. This inhibition leads to reduced cell proliferation and increased apoptosis, which may contribute to the effect of this drug as an antidepressant. VU 0134992 also blocks glutamate release from nerve terminals in the brain, which may be related to its antidepressant activity. The molecular modeling studies of this molecule suggest that it can bind to both monoamine oxidase A and B in order to prevent their enzymatic degradation of monoamines.
