This drug is used in the preparation of pharmaceutical preparations and is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and other conditions. The magnesium salt form is a polymorphic substance that has a crystalline form that occurs in nature, called alpha form, and a synthetic form that occurs in laboratory experiments and has been designated beta form. The alpha form exhibits enantioselectivity when it binds to the enzyme pepsin, which causes the drug to have an antiulcer effect.</p>
