It is an all-trans retinoic acid that has been chemically modified to increase its water solubility and stability. Tazarotenic acid sulfone also interacts with the substrate binding site on cytochrome P450 enzyme, inhibiting the metabolic activation of exogenous substances such as acetonitrile and ammonium formate.
