The reaction mechanism involves the formation of water vapor, which reacts with the sodium carbonate to produce sodium hydroxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas then combines with the stearic acid to form stearyl alcohol. This process creates a particle that can be used as a catalyst for chemical reactions such as those found in bone cancer or fetal bovine growth. Stearic acid binds calcium ions and has been shown to have potential use as a drug treatment for osteoporosis.
