Valifenalate is a synthetic compound that belongs to the group of antibiotics. It is an antiviral, antiparasitic, and natural antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria and fungi. Valifenalate is a potent inhibitor of viral replication, which may be due to its ability to inhibit RNA synthesis in the virus by binding at the active site of the enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Valifenalate inhibits DNA synthesis by binding at the active site of bacterial DNA-dependent DNA polymerase, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Valifenalate also has anti-inflammatory properties that are likely due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
