It is used in the treatment of cancer and is metabolized through a number of metabolic transformations, including hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. The impurity C is a natural metabolite that can be found in urine as well as in plasma. This impurity has not been identified as a major metabolite of pemetrexed.
