This conversion process involves condensing one molecule of fumarate with two molecules of tenofovir, forming tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TFD). TFD can be converted back to Tenofovir using hydrolysis and hydrogenation. Impurities in TFD include isopropyl tenofovir and unidentified impurities that are not present in the parent drug, tenofovir.
