It also inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol by inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. Pravastatin diol lactone has been shown to be effective in reducing serum cholesterol levels in animal models and inhibiting esterification of cholesterol by preventing the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid, which is an important step in the synthesis of cholesterol. Pravastatin diol lactone is a polyketide that was discovered from a fungus and chemically altered to produce this drug.
