It has been shown to be metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are found in the liver, and eliminated by glucuronidation. This compound has been shown to have antiplatelet activity and is used for the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot tolerate warfarin or those who need a higher dose of warfarin than can be achieved with standard doses. 5''''-Methyl-apixaban also inhibits platelet aggregation, leading to decreased blood clot formation. 5''''-Methyl-apixaban has been shown to have a number of metabolites including apixaban, which is formed through oxidation; apixanone, which is formed through hydrolysis; and apixanol, which is formed through conjugation with glucuronic acid. Apixanone has been shown to have more potent antiplatelet activity
