It is an analytical standard for natural lincomycin and an impurity in the synthetic production of lincomycin. N-Demethyl lincomycin hydrochloride is synthesized from the drug product, 4-demethyllincomycin, which is obtained from fermentation of Streptomyces lincolnensis. This drug product has been shown to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomal protein S12. N-Demethyl lincomycin hydrochloride has a purity greater than 98% and can be used as a high purity HPLC standard or as a pharmacopoeia standard.
