It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Fluorobexarotene is used for the diagnosis of x-linked adrenoleukodystrophy and is currently being studied as a treatment for liver cancer. This molecule is also an agonist of retinoic acid receptors, which may be responsible for its effects on gene transcription.
