• Descripción: Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione antidiabetic agent that is used to treat type 2 diabetes. Pioglitazone has been shown to have the potential to attenuate insulin resistance and decrease hepatic glucose output. Pioglitazone has also been shown to inhibit many of the enzymes involved in the metabolism of glucose, such as glucokinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, and pyruvate dehydrogenase. In addition, pioglitazone has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity by increasing the number of insulin receptors on cell membranes. Pioglitazone has also been shown to reduce blood pressure through its effects on erythropoietin activity and nitric oxide production.
