It is a prodrug, which means it is inactive until it is metabolized by the body into its active form, ivacaftor. Ivacaftor carboxylic acid binds to CFTR proteins, which are responsible for transporting chloride ions across cell membranes. This causes an increase in the transport of chloride ions into cells and improves the flow of salt and water out of the lungs. Ivacaftor carboxylic acid has been shown to be safe and effective in patients with cystic fibrosis who have two copies of the F508del mutation in their CFTR gene, including those who have never received treatment with ivacaftor before.
