DAD was synthesized by reacting 2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)phenol (BMP) and 3,3'-dimethylazobenzene (DAB). The molecule has an adduct with lithium to form the lithium salt of DAD. This substance has been studied using spectroscopy and x-rays which have revealed its chemical structure.
