It is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth and has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli. 2-Methyl-D-cysteine hydrochloride is synthesized by cyclocondensation of the amino acid cysteine with the triethylamine derivative desferrithiocin. The chirality of this compound can be modified with an enzyme from Streptomyces sp. This modification removes the sulfur atom from the molecule, which makes it more soluble in water.
