3-Keto-7a,12a-dihydroxy-5a-cholanic acid is a steroid hormone that is synthesized from cholesterol. It is one of the major hormones involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The levels of this hormone increase during ovulation, with maximal concentration occurring at midcycle. 3-Keto-7a,12a-dihydroxy-5a-cholanic acid is converted by enzymes into estradiol and testosterone. 3-Keto-7a,12a-dihydroxy-5a-cholanic acid may also be involved in regulating peptide hormones and pheromones.
